Planning Your Move

What Affects the Cost of a Senior Move

Every senior move is different, so there is no single price that fits every family. Here is what shapes the cost, so you know what to expect before you ask for a quote.

The cost of moving a parent or loved one depends on how much help your family needs and how complicated the move is. We do not publish set prices because the right plan starts with a conversation about your situation. These are the main factors we talk through.

  1. Home size and amount of belongings

A one-bedroom apartment and a family home of forty years are very different projects. The more rooms, closets, garages and storage areas involved, the more time it takes to sort, pack and move everything.

  2. Distance of the move

A move across town to a nearby community is simpler than a longer trip. Drive time, the route, and whether the move can be done in a single day all play a part in planning and pricing.

  3. Packing and unpacking

Some families pack most of the home themselves and ask for help with the rest. Others want every room packed and every box unpacked at the new home. Full packing and unpacking takes more hands and more time than a partial pack.

  4. Downsizing and sorting help

Moving into assisted living or independent living usually means fewer belongings. Help deciding what comes along, what goes to family, and what is donated or cleared out adds time before moving day, but it often makes the new space feel calmer and more like home.

  5. Stairs, elevators and access

Multiple flights of stairs, long walks from door to truck, narrow entries, and elevator reservations at the new community can all change how long a move takes and how many people are needed.

  6. Timing and flexibility

A move with a firm deadline, such as a lease ending or a room opening at a community, leaves less room to schedule. More flexibility generally makes planning easier. Weekends, month-end dates and busy seasons can fill up quickly.
